Car-free North Bay: take the ferry to Sausalito and spend a day by the water
Make a small loop around the dock, plan your return first, then decide how long to linger

Take the ferry between San Francisco's Ferry Building and Sausalito, explore parks near the dock and short walks, leave time for the return trip, and distinguish mountain or forest outings that require separate reservations.
You can enjoy a comfortable North Bay day without a car. For a first trip, keep your destination to the area around the Sausalito ferry dock. The boat ride is part of the day; once there, walk, eat, and watch the water without rushing into the hills. This is a small North Bay waterfront outing, not a tour of all Marin County.
Choose your return ferry before planning the day's pace
Select Sausalito–San Francisco on Golden Gate Ferry's official schedule. Check outbound and return times, the weekday or weekend/holiday version, and service alerts. This guide starts and ends at San Francisco's Ferry Building. Don't show up at another operator's dock just because it has a boat to Sausalito. Use your chosen operator's ticketing and boarding information.
Choose a planned return sailing and check for an acceptable later backup. Don't assume another boat will run after the last scheduled sailing. Include land connections needed to get home. Allow at least half an hour for finding the dock, lining up, and giving companions a rest. This is planning buffer time, not the operator's boarding cutoff.
After arriving, pause near the dock
After disembarking, locate the return boarding area before visiting nearby Gabrielson Park. The city confirms that it sits beside the ferry terminal and has lawns, benches, and picnic tables, making it a useful meeting and rest spot. Have water, enjoy the bay, and decide how far you feel like walking. A park suitable for resting does not mean an event is taking place there.

Main route: A plaza, a small park, then back to the water
Walk from the ferry plaza through the Tracy Way pedestrian area toward Viña del Mar Park, take a short stroll along nearby Bridgeway, then return the same way to the ferry plaza and Gabrielson Park. This is a small loop around the dock, not a long coastal walk. Check the walking connection between Tracy Way and the park in Sausalito's ferry landing improvement project information.
Consider arriving by ferry in the morning, eating nearby at lunchtime within your budget, and leaving the afternoon for an unhurried walk. Before heading farther from the dock, check how far you'll need to return. Turn back whenever you reach a place you're happy to stop. If you want a longer walk, a bike rental, or a trip uphill, reassess energy and transportation rather than treating another destination as an automatic extension.
Make a separate plan for Muir Woods
Muir Woods is not a waterfront stop you can simply walk to after leaving the ferry. The National Park Service notes that shuttle service varies by season and departure point and requires checking reservations. Other transit options involve mountain hiking. To see the redwoods, first check seasonal shuttles and return options on the NPS Directions page, then consider making it a separate day. Don't add it spontaneously after lunch in Sausalito.
Leave room for changes on the return trip
Check items off to organize your thoughts. Your selections reset when you leave this page.
You don't have to add more sights in the afternoon. Find a seat with a water view, confirm your return trip, and walk back to the dock at an easy pace. That usually suits a car-free outing better than rushing. Save unfinished stops for next time; there is no need to force the itinerary together with an unplanned taxi ride.
