In 30 seconds

  1. DMVClosed all day Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027; Dec 24 and Dec 31 not published①
  2. Social SecurityOffices closed Nov 26 and Dec 25; Nov 27, Dec 24 and Dec 31 are not on the holiday list②
  3. BARTSunday service, 8 a.m. to midnight, on Nov 26, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027⑤

  5. SF Public LibraryClosed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1; closes at 5 p.m. on Dec 24 and Dec 31⑪

Below, agency by agency, are the arrangements for six days: November 26, 2026 (Thanksgiving), November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving), December 24 (Christmas Eve), December 25 (Christmas Day), December 31 (New Year’s Eve) and January 1, 2027 (New Year’s Day). The brackets after each line give the basis; read them first:

  • [Dated list] the agency’s own holiday list or timetable that names this day.
  • [Standing rule] a rule the agency applies every year (for example “closed on federal holidays” or “Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving”), matched to this year’s date; not an announcement made for this year.
  • [County notice] the county says “county offices are closed this day” or “most county offices are closed”, without listing each benefits window.
  • [County holiday list] the county’s holiday list for employees; whether a benefits window opens that day is up to the department’s own notice.
  • [Not published] no official notice naming this day was found; there is no official word yet either way.

Three things to remember

A county holiday or a winter closure of “most services” is not every window; library closures are about branches; New Year’s Eve extra service needs that year’s notice.

  • A county employee holiday list is about staff days off, not each window’s hours; when a county winter closure says “many county services” or “most county offices” are closed, that is not all of them.
  • A library’s closure list says whether branches open; it does not say that online services stop.
  • A standing holiday schedule does not by itself promise extra New Year’s Eve service or free rides (VTA’s standing note does add light rail on New Year’s Eve; see below); for service and fares on New Year’s Eve 2026, look for each agency’s notice for that night.

DMV and Social Security (SSA)

DMV closes Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1; Social Security closes Nov 26 and Dec 25, and Jan 1 under its federal-holiday rule; neither has published Dec 24 or Dec 31.

A DMV field office in Eureka, Northern California, in a 2014 archive photo: what a field office can look like, not a Bay Area office. Check office locations and appointments on the DMV website.

  • California DMV (all offices): closed all day Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 [Dated list]. Dec 24 and Dec 31 are not on the DMV closure list [Not published]. The list covers offices only; for online services and kiosks, see the DMV site.
  • Social Security (all offices): closed Nov 26 and Dec 25 [Dated list]. Closed Jan 1, 2027 [Standing rule: SSA says all offices close on federal holidays, and OPM’s 2027 federal holiday schedule lists January 1]. Nov 27, Dec 24 and Dec 31 are not federal holidays and are not on SSA’s holiday list [Not published]. Phone and online services are not part of this list.

County social services (benefits) offices in nine counties

Of the nine counties, Santa Clara says its benefits offices close on county holidays and San Francisco’s 1460 Mission center says it closes on City holidays; the others mostly have county-wide notices or holiday lists.

These are the county social services departments that handle CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs and other benefits. A county holiday is not always spelled out for each benefits window; each line says how far the notice goes.

  • Alameda County Social Services Agency: county offices closed Nov 26, Nov 27 and Dec 25 [County notice]. Dec 24 and Dec 31 are not on the county’s closure list [Not published]; the county’s list runs only through 2026, so Jan 1, 2027 is [Not published].
  • Contra Costa County EHSD: all six days [Not published]. The EHSD site gives only the service center’s weekday 8 a.m. phone opening and no holiday hours.
  • Marin County HHS: Nov 26, Nov 27 and Dec 25 are county holidays [County holiday list], with no separate notice for the benefits windows. Dec 24, Dec 31 and Jan 1, 2027 [Not published]: the county calendar we read runs only through 2026.
  • Napa County HHSA: the county’s standing rule closes county offices on Thanksgiving, the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, which fall on Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 24, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 [Standing rule]. For December 26–31 the county says only that “many county services” close, so whether HHSA opens on Dec 31 is [Not published].
  • San Francisco HSA: the 1460 Mission service center says it is open “excluding City holidays”, and the City’s 2026 holiday data lists Nov 26, Nov 27 and Dec 25, so that center is closed those three days [Standing rule]. Other service sites, Dec 24 and Dec 31 are [Not published]; the City holiday data runs only through 2026, so Jan 1, 2027 is also [Not published].
  • San Mateo County HSA: the county’s employee resolution lists Thanksgiving, the day after, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as county holidays, and HSA’s overpayment repayment window at 1 Davis Drive (Belmont) is open “excluding holidays”, so that window is closed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 [County holiday list]; the regional benefits offices have no notice of their own. The county sets three winter recess days between Dec 26 and Dec 31, when departments may cut to minimum staffing or close; HSA’s plans for Dec 24 and Dec 31 are [Not published].
  • Santa Clara County Social Services Agency: the benefits application page says “offices are closed for county holidays”, and the county holiday list includes Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027, so the Senter Road, Mountain View and Gilroy application offices are closed those four days [Standing rule]. Dec 24 and Dec 31 are not county holidays [Not published].
  • Solano County Employment & Eligibility: the county’s human resources page lists Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 as county holidays [County holiday list], with no separate notice for the benefits offices. Dec 24 and Dec 31 are partial-day holidays that do not apply to all bargaining units; when the benefits offices close is [Not published].
  • Sonoma County Human Services: the county calendar says “most Sonoma County offices closed” on Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 [County notice], not all of them. Dec 24 and Dec 31 [Not published].

Eight library systems

All eight library systems close Nov 26 and Dec 25; on New Year’s Eve most close at 5 p.m., Oakland at 5:30pm and Berkeley at 6.

  • San Francisco Public Library: closed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027; all locations close at 5 p.m. on Dec 24 and Dec 31 [Dated list].
  • Oakland Public Library: closed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 24, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027; all branches close at 5:30 p.m. on Dec 31 [Dated list].
  • Berkeley Public Library: closed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 24 and Dec 25; all locations close at 6 p.m. on Dec 31 [Dated list]. Jan 1, 2027 is not on the 2026 schedule [Not published].
  • San José Public Library: closed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 24, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 [Dated list]. Dec 31 is not listed; the page’s “close at 5 p.m.” line is for New Year’s Eve 2025 [Not published].
  • Santa Clara County Library District: closed Nov 26, Nov 27 and Dec 25; closes at 5 p.m. on Dec 24 and Dec 31 [Dated list]. Jan 1, 2027 is not on the 2026 list [Not published].
  • San Mateo County Libraries: closed Nov 26, Nov 27 and Dec 25, and closed Dec 26–27 for winter recess; closes at 5 p.m. on Dec 24 and Dec 31 [Dated list]. Jan 1, 2027: the Belmont, San Carlos and Woodside branch pages say closed all day [Dated list, three branches]; for other branches, see each branch page.
  • Alameda County Library: closed Nov 26, Nov 27, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027; closes at 5 p.m. on Dec 24 and Dec 31 [Dated list].
  • Contra Costa County Library: closed Nov 26, Dec 24 and Dec 25; closes at 5 p.m. on Dec 31 [Dated list]. Nov 27 is not on the closure list, and Jan 1, 2027 is not on the 2026 list [Not published].

Five transit agencies

BART, AC Transit and VTA run Sunday schedules on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day; Caltrain runs modified schedules Nov 27 and Dec 24.

  • BART: Sunday service, 8 a.m. to midnight, on Nov 26, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027 [Dated list]. Nov 27, Dec 24 and Dec 31 are not on BART’s holiday schedule [Not published], and no extra New Year’s Eve service has been announced.
  • Muni: weekend schedule with Sunday operators on Nov 26 and Jan 1, 2027, weekend schedule with Saturday operators on Dec 25, and the weekday non-school schedule on Nov 27 [Dated list]. On weekend-schedule days the 1X, 5R, 8AX, 8BX, 9R, 28R and 714 do not run, the Muni Metro subway opens at 8 a.m., and Early Morning Metro buses run from 5 to 8 a.m. Dec 24 and Dec 31 have no notice of their own [Not published].
  • Muni on New Year’s Eve: the fare policy the SFMTA Board approved in April 2026 lists free rides from 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, but this set of fare changes takes effect January 4, 2027; whether New Year’s Eve 2026 is free, and that night’s service, depend on SFMTA’s notice [Not published].
  • Caltrain: weekend schedule on Nov 26 and Dec 25, weekday schedule on Dec 31, and modified schedules on Nov 27 and Dec 24, with timetables posted a few weeks ahead [Dated list]. Monthly passes are good across all zones on these holidays (except Christmas Eve). Jan 1, 2027 is not on the holiday schedule yet (its “January 1” is 2026) [Not published].
  • AC Transit: Sunday schedules on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas [Standing rule], which fall on Nov 26, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027; each line runs its own Sunday timetable. Nov 27, Dec 24 and Dec 31 have no notice of their own [Not published].
  • VTA: buses and light rail run the Sunday/holiday schedule on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, which fall on Nov 26, Dec 25 and Jan 1, 2027; the day after Thanksgiving (Nov 27) is a modified weekday service with no Express routes; on New Year’s Eve (Dec 31) VTA adds light rail service and runs Rapid 500 later between San Jose Diridon and Berryessa BART [Standing rule], with 2026 times not yet announced. Dec 24 has no notice of its own [Not published].
