The memorable moment in a redwood forest is feeling small beneath the trees. You do not need a long hike for that at Muir Woods: the main trail near the entrance already passes towering coast redwoods. On a first visit, focus on arriving smoothly, slowing down and returning comfortably rather than adding an ambitious uphill trail.

Reserve arrival separately from admission

  • Allow 1.5–2.5 hours inside, plus winding-road or shuttle travel. Closing time changes seasonally; check the day’s notices.
  • Standard admission is $15 per person age 16+, free for ages 15 and under. Standard-vehicle parking reservations cost $10; round-trip shuttle tickets cost $4 for ages 16+, with free child tickets that still require reservations.
  • All vehicles and shuttle riders need advance reservations. Admission or a park pass does not reserve parking or a shuttle seat. Plan around available shuttle dates, stops and departures.

Stop 1 of 3

Arrive: Visitor Center

Download reservations, maps and return details before leaving: there is no cell service or Wi-Fi in and around the valley. Ask staff about main-trail access and surfaces to avoid.

Stop 2 of 3

Short option: Bridge 2 loop

The loop to Bridge 2 is about 0.5 miles, estimated by NPS at half an hour. Add time for looking and resting, and follow posted directions back to the entrance.

Stop 3 of 3

Longer option: return via Bridge 3

If comfortable, choose the roughly 1-mile Bridge 3 loop, estimated at an hour. The west side between bridges 2 and 3 is rougher; ask a ranger about mobility needs and avoid adding Hillside Trail just to complete a loop.

Plan your departure before arrival rather than expecting to request a ride after the walk. Save the meeting point, time, driver or shuttle stop and return plan offline. The main trail mixes boardwalk and paved surfaces, with possible root heave, so strollers and wheelchairs may still encounter obstacles. Keep the path clear for upward-looking photos, stay behind barriers and do not assume picnics are allowed inside the park.
