What this guide helps you understand

Turn three destinations often squeezed into one day into workable choices: October redwood shuttles, Point Reyes transit limits, Half Moon Bay route 294 and beach parking, with costs, offline preparation, accessibility questions and booking fallbacks.

Separate a redwood walk, a remote coastline visit and lunch with a beach stroll. Editor advice: choose one main destination for the day, even with a rental car. A navigation estimate omits car collection, queues, walking, meals, refueling and traffic on the return.

  • Without a car and able to reserve both ways: check the dated Muir Woods shuttle first. If it does not work, choose a city park or the existing Sausalito waterfront half-day guide.
  • With a car and a wish for open coastline: give Point Reyes its own day. An editorial limit is Bear Valley plus one confirmed-open destination.
  • Based on the Peninsula and wanting food and an easy stroll: compare route 294 with driving to Half Moon Bay, including the final stretch to the beach.

The day before: fill in the transport details

Ask everyone about walking tolerance, wheelchairs or strollers, and the time they must be back. Work backward from an acceptable return before dark or dinner. A city outing is usually easier to control on a flight day.

Muir Woods: admission and getting there are separate costs

NPS currently lists standard admission at $15 per visitor aged 16 or over; under-16s enter free. Parking or shuttle reservations cost extra. Check the coverage and photo-ID requirements of any eligible park pass; it does not reserve parking or a shuttle seat.

The authorized booking site’s detailed operating section specifies Saturdays and Sundays in October from Larkspur Ferry Terminal: $4 adult round trip, free for ages 15 and under, with reservations for both directions. Its broader Friday–Sunday introduction does not confirm October Friday service; check the dated booking calendar.

Check dated shuttle service and both reservations(opens in a new tab)

Use the official reservation entry to choose the date, party and both directions. Book the ADA shuttle in advance when required for a wheelchair or mobility device. Do not treat a seat as secured until confirmed.

Confirm ferry, shuttle and parking separately

A ferry trip from SF to Larkspur is not a shuttle booking. The shuttle page asks riders to arrive 15 minutes early. Allow separately for ferry tickets, walking and waiting, and check terminal parking if driving there. The shuttle fare is not the day’s total.

Save confirmations, maps and return details offline. NPS reports no cellular service and limited visitor-center Wi-Fi; plan as though the whole visit is offline. Do not rely solely on booking a rideshare after the walk, and agree on a precise meeting place before separating.

If reservations are unavailable

Try another date or arrival method rather than using unreserved parking. The route 61 option described by NPS entails about 1.3 miles downhill and an uphill return; it is not a practical last-minute fallback for wheelchair, stroller or low-stamina visitors. Consider a shorter city outing.

Point Reyes: reaching the area is not a tour of the whole park

NPS charges no admission, ordinary visitor-center or trailhead parking, or standard day-use fees. Camping and special uses are separate. Free entry still leaves transport, fuel, food and return costs to budget.

NPS describes West Marin Stagecoach access from San Rafael to the Bear Valley area, but no service farther west than Inverness and no public transport touring the park’s destinations. If you want the lighthouse, Tomales Point or remote beaches without a car, arrange the full journey before setting out.

Refuel before the remote section

NPS says there are no fuel or vehicle service stations within the seashore. Refuel or charge before leaving town and bring water and lunch. EV drivers should verify usable charging rather than treating a map marker as live availability.

Check Point Reyes roads and trails before leaving(opens in a new tab)

Open current alerts before choosing the actual destination. Blank or unloaded dynamic content does not mean there are no closures. Ask the visitor center about the intended area when needed.

Half Moon Bay: distinguish town from the beach entrance

The official SamTrans route 294 page lists Hillsdale–Half Moon Bay with separate eastbound, westbound, weekday, Saturday and Sunday schedules. Plan access from your accommodation and the final distance to 95 Kelly Avenue. Do not treat the Hillsdale shopping area and Caltrain station as the same place.

Half Moon Bay State Beach currently lists a $10 vehicle day-use fee, subject to seasonal, holiday or weekend variation, and hours of 8am to sunset. Francis Beach at 95 Kelly Avenue has listed restrooms and picnic facilities. Day use and campsite reservations are separate; follow posted entrance charges.

Keep a beach visit easy to shorten

State Parks warns of cold water and rip currents. Treat this as a shore walk and shorten it when conditions worsen. Ask Francis Beach’s entrance station about the free beach wheelchair beforehand; availability is not guaranteed.

Check route 294 by direction(opens in a new tab)

Select the actual day type and save the coast-side return stop and departure. If connections are too limited, choose driving, confirmed round-trip transport or a city outing.

  • Redwoods day: reserved arrival → short forest walk → booked return. Add anything extra only after reaching the transport hub.
  • Point Reyes day: check conditions at Bear Valley → one reachable destination → return. If the remote stop is closed, keep the nearer visit.
  • Half Moon Bay day: lunch → short Francis Beach walk → return stop early. Bus waits should not consume the buffer for a flight or fixed dinner reservation.

Total five budget lines: admission, parking or shuttle, cross-bay travel, food and backup transport. The official unit prices here are not all-in trip costs or proof of availability. Compare a shared rental against the full transit journey and everyone’s stamina.
