What this guide helps you understand

Start here if your child already attends school elsewhere and you are moving now. Aim to confirm five things: receiving school, first-day time, class or timetable, health and learning-support contacts, and daily transportation. “Submitted” is an intermediate status; do not wait for next year’s application cycle to ask about current enrollment.

Use the regional guides to identify the responsible district

  • Use the existing San Francisco, East Bay, Peninsula, South Bay, and North Bay school guides to identify the enrollment office for your full address, grade, and 2026–27 school year. Siblings in different grades may belong to different districts.
  • Specify whether you are moving into the district, changing schools within it, or seeking attendance while living outside it. The forms and approvals differ; avoid duplicate student records.
Start with the San Francisco school guide

The regional guides cover districts and school options; this guide continues with midyear records and onboarding.

East Bay families: identify the district for your address

Start with the official Alameda or Contra Costa county directory; a city name does not determine a school.

Peninsula families: check elementary and high-school districts separately

Different grades may require separate applications and record transfers.

South Bay families: check boundaries for the intended year

Identify the responsible district before choosing its registration system.

North Bay families: locate the enrollment office by county

Search Marin, Sonoma, or Napa separately, then confirm with the responsible district.

Before leaving: ask how records should be transferred

Ask the new district who receives records, whether electronic or sealed paper delivery is accepted, and whether a parental release is needed. Give the receiving contact to the former school’s registrar. Keep readable copies to explain courses and support, but let the receiving office decide whether they can replace official records.

Coordinate the last attendance date and expected new start date with both schools. Follow the former school’s instructions for returns and withdrawal. If records are delayed, tell the receiving office exactly what is missing and whom you contacted, then ask what can proceed rather than delaying enrollment indefinitely yourself.

Residence documents are not interchangeable across districts

Mark each item on the district’s current list as available, missing, or requiring an alternative. SFUSD, for example, specifies a 45-day window for some recent documents, separately lists current leases and other documents, and excludes cell-phone bills as address proof. Do not apply its document counts, dates, or forms to other districts.

For shared housing, mismatched addresses, or missing bills, ask enrollment staff about accepted affidavits or verification. SMUHSD lists shared-residence/caregiver forms; SFUSD describes affidavits for certain unavailable documents. Do not treat another person’s bill as your own proof or alter names or dates.

Current-year submission checkpoints in three areas

SFUSD: choose the current 2026–27 year and contact a counselor(opens in a new tab)

Use ParentVUE or the paper/PDF process shown on the page. For midyear placement, contact the Enrollment Center at 415-241-6085 and explain what is submitted or missing.

SMFCSD: complete document verification after registration(opens in a new tab)

Aeries Registration and the existing-student Parent Portal use separate accounts. Registration is complete after document verification. A closed priority window does not end midyear registration; ask about placement if the grade is full.

SJUSD: use the correct boundary version and obtain staff confirmation(opens in a new tab)

Separate locators apply to 2026–27 and 2027–28 onward. After online submission or Enrollment Center assistance, requirements and a staff confirmation email are still needed. Ask about documents and assistance at 408-535-6412.

Peninsula high-school families should use SMUHSD’s current-school-year link rather than the prominently displayed 2027–28 dates. Student Services emails verification and placement after review. Ask about missing documents at 650-558-2251 or enrollment@smuhsd.org. Portal submission alone does not confirm readiness to attend classes.

Hand health and learning support to the responsible staff

If health records are unclear or delayed, contact the school health office with the originals you have. CDPH has specific rules for obtaining transfer records; the school determines applicability. Do not independently translate vaccine equivalencies, decide additional doses, or declare attendance clearance. Ask which qualified provider should complete any needed assessment or form.

For medication, allergy response, or other school health needs, ask about forms, clinician signatures, and handover. SJUSD’s health page provides contacts and documents; other districts have their own procedures. Confirm who receives records and coordinates daily communication rather than assuming a parent note completes the arrangements.

Tell enrollment staff about an existing IEP or 504 plan and request contact with the receiving team. List current supports, the former school contact, and available records. Ask who will discuss continuity before attendance, how to reach them in week one, and whether further assessments are needed. Do not wait merely because the portal lacks an upload field.

Complete the Home Language Survey accurately, describing the child’s languages, former instructional language, and the family’s preferred communication language. Ask about assessments, timing, attendance during assessment, and support contacts. Speaking Chinese at home does not automatically place a child in a particular language program.

Two obstacles: full schools and unstable housing

If the neighborhood school is full, ask about an available school, start date, waitlist, and transportation. SMFCSD and SJUSD both describe alternate placement when capacity is reached. An address or school tour does not reserve a seat. Record the immediate attendance arrangement separately from any return waitlist.

If housing loss, economic hardship, or similar circumstances leave you staying with others, in a motel, or in unstable housing, describe the situation to the district homeless liaison. CDE explains immediate-enrollment protections for eligible students despite missing routine records. Ask the liaison about eligibility and procedures; not every short-term rental or hotel stay qualifies.

Documentation and housing barriers: read CDE guidance(opens in a new tab)

Ask the responsible district for its liaison and provide the issue and application records through official channels.

Before arrival and during week one: connect daily routines

A follow-up message for the enrollment office

Sample template: replace the text in brackets, review it, then send.

We applied for grade [grade] in the current 2026–27 year; our reference is [number]. We submitted [document types] and are awaiting [items/former-school transfer]. Please confirm the next responsible contact, accepted alternatives or assistance, placement status, and first-day arrangements. We also need continuity for [health/IEP/language/high-school courses]. Please provide the appropriate contact. Sensitive documents will use your designated channel.

Completion means a workable attendance and class plan, with a responsible contact and follow-up date for remaining documents. Keep review emails, the timetable, and key contacts. Finishing an online form is not the end of the process.

Processes checked October 2, 2026, with a focus on transfers during 2026–27. The responsible district determines boundaries, documentation, health clearance, grade placement, and course recognition. The follow-up sequence is editorial guidance, not a Bay Area-wide rule or guaranteed start date.
