A South Bay city can contain several school districts, and one address may have separate elementary and high-school districts. Establish the grade, school year, and actual residence, then use Santa Clara County Office of Education lookup and directory tools. County tools help identify the district; the district confirms the school and placement.

Check address and grade in all three cities

  • San José: the city name does not automatically mean SJUSD. Once district residence is confirmed, use the 2026–27 locator for that year and the separate locator for 2027–28 onward; future boundaries do not establish current placement.
  • Cupertino: Cupertino Union’s (CUSD) elementary-level locator does not replace a high-school lookup. For high school, separately use Fremont Union High School District’s (FUHSD) Address Check Tool.
  • Sunnyvale: Sunnyvale School District enrollment and FUHSD high-school enrollment are separate, but not every Sunnyvale address belongs to these districts. Cross-check the county directory and the relevant district tools first.

Follow up on placement after submitting

Prepare the documents listed for the correct school year, submit online or request in-person help, and save the receipt. SJUSD states that enrollment is complete only after requirements are met and staff send confirmation; ask other districts about review status, assigned school, and attendance arrangements too. Interdistrict and intradistrict transfers have their own processes, so ask about release, acceptance, and waiting lists. Do not assume finishing middle school automatically completes high-school enrollment.

Newcomer families can ask about English learner assessment, interpretation, counselor meetings, and secure transfer of prior records and learning-support plans. For a midyear move, confirm course continuity, especially high-school credits and schedules. Ask both schools to explain the transition before assuming the receiving arrangements are complete.

Arrange school visits and college exploration through official sites

Open school websites through the SCCOE directory and ask the office about available visits. Focus on courses, after-school capacity and fees, daily transportation, and a contact for new students. SJSU has separate admissions and campus-visit resources. At Foothill College, review application steps, then locate the office and campus map. College applications depend on student type, term, and program; K–12 residential assignment does not apply, and visiting does not reserve admission.

Enter addresses only through official channels

Enter your full residential address in the official locator. Do not post a child’s name, date of birth, home address, or documents in public questions, community posts, or this website. Ask the district about alternative verification and assistance if documents are missing or you share housing or have temporary accommodation.

A short district inquiry template

Sample template: replace the text in brackets, review it, then send.

Hello, we plan to apply for [grade] in [school year/month] and have checked your official address locator. Should we use new-student enrollment, an intradistrict school change, or an interdistrict transfer? What documents are needed, and how do we confirm school placement and the start date? We would also like information about [language/learning/after-school care] support.
