Start with three questions: where you actually live, your child's grade, and the intended school year. Save official links before comparing programs and travel arrangements, so a property's mention of a nearby school is not mistaken for an admission promise. This guide focuses on public K–12; colleges follow separate admissions processes.

Check the address and understand application-based assignment

Open School Finder from the SFUSD school directory, search with the actual street address and grade, then confirm residency eligibility and the relevant program with the Enrollment Center. Mailing cities, ZIP codes and property listings do not replace verification. SFUSD assigns schools after application using its rules and available seats; neither proximity nor an elementary attendance area reserves a seat. Check TK, elementary, middle and high school rules separately. An elementary placement does not establish the entire pathway through high school; elsewhere in the Bay Area, different districts may serve different grade levels.

Follow the process for the school year and student status

  • New students seeking 2026–27 enrollment can contact the Enrollment Center throughout the year. Use ParentVUE from the Apply page or the official paper/PDF process, then confirm the school, grade and start date.
  • For 2027–28, choose the next-year application and check its opening date and deadline. Distinguish the current school year, application receipt and final assignment.
  • Check residency, age and other documents against the official list and submit them only through official channels, not this site or public groups. Ask the Enrollment Center for help with missing documents, temporary housing or language support.

Current students seeking another school should check the applicable transfer process. Spring Transfer serves eligible current SFUSD students and excludes charter-school students. A successful assignment automatically replaces the previous placement; it is not an exploratory request that you can accept or decline later. For attendance across district boundaries, check interdistrict permits with both the district of residence and the receiving district.

Use visits to compare everyday needs

Shortlist two or three schools from the official directory and check tour bookings. Ask about language programs, learning support, school hours, after-school availability and transport; try the journey in advance. A visit does not promise admission, and access to classrooms or school activities requires permission. Check program requirements for the intended year.

Universities and community colleges: separate campus and admission checks

CCSF's location directory includes Ocean Campus and centers such as Mission and Chinatown/North Beach; the class schedule determines where a course meets. Start degree, certificate or transfer study through Start Here, then follow the class-registration instructions. At San Francisco State, choose the appropriate applicant type in Admissions and use Visit Campus for bookings or self-guided maps. Both are separate from K–12 district assignment: living nearby does not replace an application. Confirm visit dates, accessible facilities and permitted areas with the institution.
