Using FasTrak: separate bridge tolls, express lanes, and rental cars
Identify the toll facility, then check the account, plate, tag, and occupancy

Distinguish bridge tolls from optional express lanes, arrange payment for your own or a rental vehicle, check carpool requirements, and recognize fraudulent payment texts.
Seeing FasTrak in navigation does not mean the entire freeway is tolled or that an account automatically grants carpool discounts. Separate which bridge you will cross from whether you choose an express lane, then check the vehicle and payment method. Rental toll services may cover bridges without covering express lanes; ask at pickup rather than untangling charges later.
First distinguish bridge tolls from optional express lanes
- Bridges: check the named bridge, direction, and vehicle category. The Golden Gate Bridge charges southbound into San Francisco and does not take cash at the bridge. Use FasTrak’s bridge directory for other crossings.
- Express lanes: general-purpose lanes remain an option. Read destinations, current tolls, and operating periods before entering, and use permitted lane markings; do not cross double white lines to reach an exit.
- The two toll types are separate. Do not add the prices for different destinations on one toll sign, and do not apply express lane carpool discounts directly to bridges.
Account, tag, and carpool eligibility are separate checks
Regular or short-term license plate accounts can pay bridge tolls but do not provide express lane access. Before using an express lane, confirm a valid FasTrak account and suitable tag; carpool discounts require a correctly set Flex. Occupancy rules vary: when checked, two-person carpools were free on I-580, while ordinary two-person vehicles paid half price on US-101, subject to tag requirements. For bridges, separately check occupancy, hours, designated lanes, and tags; six state-owned bridges changed their requirements in 2026.

Check vehicle registration and rental-plan coverage
For your own car, check account status, the plate and issuing state, and mount the tag as instructed. Ask a rental company whether its plan covers bridges and express lanes, what service fees apply, and how to opt out if paying yourself. With your own FasTrak, register the rental plate and accurate start and end dates, update extensions, and remove the tag on return. For bridge-only trips, check short-term plate options and deadlines. Pay an existing invoice through the invoice-payment route; opening an account is not a substitute.
Check before driving and verify notices independently
FasTrak explicitly does not request payment through texts with website links. If a message says payment is due today, manually open bayareafastrak.org to check records or contact official support, rather than entering payment details through the text. Compare travel dates, the bridge or lane, and your rental period; use the official inquiry route for discrepancies.
