It's easy to buy as you browse a farmers market, then get home to find there isn't enough fridge space or time to cook it all. On your first visit, narrow the goal: shop for two meals and choose one unfamiliar ingredient. At San Francisco's Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, the useful skill is choosing, asking, and getting food home—not learning every stall in one trip.

Confirm which market you're visiting and on which day

Start with market operator Foodwise's Visitor Info page to confirm that day's market, hours, and location. Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is outside the Ferry Building; the shops inside have different hours. Vendors may also change by market and day. An older photo doesn't guarantee the same produce or prepared food is available today.

When meeting friends, choose an easy-to-recognize meeting point and decide whether to eat or shop first. Home is the best next destination after buying groceries. If you also want an afternoon of exhibitions or shopping, buy fewer chilled items or leave grocery shopping until last. Don't leave food waiting in the car while you attend another event.

Check items off to organize your thoughts. Your selections reset when you leave this page.

Your list can describe a use rather than a specific variety: "vegetables for tonight's stir-fry" or "fruit for tomorrow's breakfast." At the stall, ask whether prices are per pound, box, or bunch, and confirm weight and total before paying. If you're unsure how to prepare something, ask whether it is best raw or cooked and how to store it. That is more useful than buying a big bag just because it looks colorful.

Browse once, then ask about payment and samples

Foodwise says most vendors accept credit cards or contactless payment. “Most” does not mean every stall accepts your phone. Read the signs or ask first. The Info Booth also offers market tokens; check how they work and any fees. Ask permission before sampling, selecting produce, or taking close-up photos, and respect the vendor's normal service flow.

Regular pets are not allowed in this market's certified farmers market area; service animals are an exception. An outdoor setting does not automatically mean dogs are welcome. For another Bay Area market, check its own operator rather than assuming Ferry Plaza's payment and entry rules apply. Keep bags close in crowds and leave room in the aisle when stopping to chat.

Keep food cool before deciding to explore more

FDA outdoor food guidance recommends transporting refrigerated food in an insulated container with ice or ice packs, keeping it around 4°C or below. Perishables such as meat, eggs, and seafood should generally stay out no more than two hours, reduced to one hour when the temperature exceeds 90°F. These limits apply to food needing temperature control; they don't mean every whole, uncut fruit needs the same countdown.

Spend ten minutes at home helping the groceries reach your table

Put refrigerated items away first, then sort what you'll eat today and later. FDA recommends keeping produce in separate bags from raw meat, poultry, and seafood. Rinse produce under running water before eating or preparing it; don't use soap or dish detergent. Follow package directions for prewashed or ready-to-eat items. Keeping one or two soon-to-eat items visible saves more than filling the fridge and forgetting them.

A shopping list for two meals

Sample template: replace the text in brackets, review it, then send.

Meals planned: [first meal], [second meal]
Already at home: [ingredients]
Need to buy: [type or use / approximate quantity]
One new item to try today: [choose at the market]
Budget limit: [enter your own]
Return and cooling plan: [time until home / whether you have ice packs]

YOUR NEXT STEP

Find a market companion who likes to browse before buying

State the market, date, meeting point, shopping finish time, and whether you'll eat together. Don't describe a private meetup as a market-run event.
