What this guide helps you understand

The three Bay Area airports have different rail connections. Choose routes for San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, or the South Bay, with SJC stop relocation, SFO pickup, late-night backup, and check-in details.

Start with the airport code on your ticket, your complete destination address, and the time you expect to be ready after collecting all luggage. SFO is on the northern Peninsula, OAK in the East Bay, and SJC in the South Bay. An airport name containing San Francisco does not mean it is in the city. Compare options to the same final address, not just a downtown station.

SFO → San Francisco or the East Bay: check BART and the last mile

SFO's BART station is in the International Terminal, with AirTrain connections from domestic terminals. Rail is a useful option if your accommodation is near BART, you can manage the bags, and all connections are operating. Include walking, Muni, or another ride after the station. If the hotel is uphill, far from rail, or requires transfers with two large suitcases, compare a direct car trip.

For Peninsula or South Bay destinations along Caltrain, check the SFO–Millbrae BART leg and the connecting Caltrain separately, including the train's stops. Do not assume every departure reaches Millbrae without a transfer. San Francisco's Caltrain station is not at Union Square or the Ferry Building. If one delay would lose the last connection, a direct option may be more practical on arrival night.

SFO pickup: distinguish terminal and vehicle type

SFO's overview lists Domestic Garage Level 5 for standard domestic-terminal Lyft and Uber pickups. Recheck the airport's dedicated instructions and the app for international terminals and other service types. Request a ride once all bags are with you and you can reach the pickup point, then match the plate to the booking. Friends should wait in an authorized area until you are ready, rather than waiting at the terminal curb.

OAK → the East Bay or San Francisco: connector first, main line second

Follow BART signs to the airport connector, travel to Coliseum, and transfer to a main-line train. BART's airport page says arriving travelers pay on reaching the connector platform at Coliseum. Enter OAK Airport in the planner rather than Coliseum, or the airport leg will be omitted. Follow the planner and platform displays for that evening instead of memorizing line colors.

OAK can look close to the Peninsula or South Bay across the water, but rail journeys may involve several legs. Compare BART plus onward transit with a direct car trip to the final address. For groups, divide the car cost by passengers only after confirming luggage capacity. Ferries are not curbside airport connections; getting to the terminal and catching the last boat require separate planning.

SJC: Route 60 directions differ for Caltrain and BART

  • For Caltrain at Santa Clara Transit Center, check Route 60 toward Winchester. Santa Clara and San Jose Diridon are different stations; send the correct name to anyone meeting you.
  • For Milpitas BART, check Route 60 toward Milpitas, then follow the BART itinerary. There is no BART platform inside the SJC terminals.
  • For light rail, Route 60 connects to Metro/Airport Station; onward light rail needs its own fare. SJC confirms free Route 60 boarding in either direction from the airport, not free onward rail.
October arrival detail: SJC Terminal A's temporary stop

VTA's current construction notice places the temporary Terminal A stop about 1,000 feet north of the regular stop, near Delta ticket counters, effective March 24, 2026. The airport's general page still lists its usual stop number. Open Route 60 service alerts and follow temporary signs rather than relying on an old screenshot. Include this extra walk when assessing luggage or mobility needs.

Late arrivals: check whether the entire connection still works

Check the last viable connection at every interchange, not only the first airport departure. BART generally ends around midnight, but the last usable connection to a particular destination can be earlier. Use a dated itinerary. The 511 All Nighter network may offer buses with longer journeys and waits. If connections no longer work, stay in a clearly designated waiting or service area while arranging a taxi, rideshare, confirmed hotel shuttle, or nearby lodging.

Compare costs on the same door-to-door basis

For transit, total all fares for every passenger and add the final leg. For cars, record the quoted total and whether airport charges, tolls, waiting, or child seats are included. For hotel shuttles, confirm guest eligibility, final departure, and booking requirements. Rideshare prices vary by date, vehicle, and demand, so no fixed quote is offered here. Weigh any savings against luggage, fatigue, group size, and the check-in deadline.
