At The Tech, ask what you want to try rather than what you must learn. Let a child or companion choose one experiment and repeat it instead of touching every exhibit once. Afterwards, shift to Japantown’s storefronts, street corners and community history around Jackson Street for a different pace.

Allow enough time and budget for The Tech

  • Allow 5–6 hours including food and travel within the city. With only half a day, choose either The Tech or Japantown.
  • The Tech general admission is $38 for adults and $28 for ages 3–17, students and ages 65+, including one educational IMAX film. Check other films, events and discounts for your date.
  • Use the daily opening schedule and plan around your film time. Walking Japantown’s public streets is free; shops, restaurants and museums have their own charges and hours.

Explore hands-on, then take a Japantown walk

Take the route one stop at a time

Hands-on first, a slower neighborhood visit afterwards

Suggested stop durations are editorial estimates and exclude travel to and from the area. Adjust for closures and your group’s energy.

Stop 1 of 3

First: The Tech Interactive

Head to 201 S. Market Street. Review available experiences and films on arrival, prioritize one favorite and leave time for breaks.

Stop 2 of 3

Between stops: transport and a meal

Take a break after the museum, then plan a drive or transit connection to Japantown. Do not assume a long walk is right for young children simply because both places are near downtown.

Stop 3 of 3

Second: Jackson and North Fifth

Start and finish near the intersection, exploring a short stretch of Jackson Street. Check separate museum hours and admission if you want to go inside. Return to your pickup point or Japantown/Ayer station.

The Tech’s $5 parking validation applies only at the listed Convention Center and 2nd and San Carlos garages. Bring your ticket inside for validation; it does not apply when special-event parking rates are imposed. Japantown needs its own parking plan. For visitors sensitive to noise, darkness or crowds, review the sensory guide and choose experiences they can leave comfortably; nobody has to finish an IMAX screening.
