November outdoors in the Peninsula and South Bay: marshes, redwoods or summit history
Three officially dated free outings, plus entrance and difficulty checks for independent visits

Choose the November 2 El Corte de Madera hike, November 8 Mount Umunhum history walk or November 15 Ravenswood marsh outing by distance, stairs, meeting point and conditions. Free does not mean guided interpretation is available at any time.
Start with the hardest section, then the scenery
These outings are not interchangeable easy walks. Ravenswood is relatively level but still covers about three miles; El Corte de Madera is a multi-hour forest loop; Mount Umunhum has the shortest distance but many stairs. With children, older companions or limited recent exercise, compare the hardest section first. Photos and a family-friendly label are not enough, and meeting at the summit does not mean hiking there from the foothills.
Make one guided outing the day’s main activity
- Monday, November 2: El Corte de Madera, 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. For visitors comfortable with about four miles of forest trails and interested in old trees and sandstone.
- Sunday, November 8: Mount Umunhum, 1–3 p.m. The focus is history; the roughly quarter-mile walk still includes 159 steps.
- Sunday, November 15: Ravenswood, 9:30 a.m.–noon. About three miles of salt-marsh observation for families whose walking ability fits the outing.
Leave time for a walk and a place to sit this weekend. A scene illustration, not a real event or a navigation map.
The meeting point matters more than the preserve name
A preserve may have widely separated entrances. Save the event’s meeting point, then check the lot name and final approach. Skeggs Point is on Skyline Boulevard’s east side and prohibits a left turn from the north; this Ravenswood outing meets at the end of Bay Road; Mount Umunhum meets at summit parking. Do not accept the first result for the preserve name, and separately check whether the last leg is feasible by public transport.
Free outings still have participation procedures
Midpen’s guided outings are free and require a waiver at the meeting point. Follow event-specific booking instructions where required; no reservation button does not remove check-in. Groups of eight or more should contact staff first. Dogs may join only specifically labeled dog outings, and independent walks still follow each preserve’s own rules.
Shortening or canceling can be the right plan
A November listing cannot guarantee sunshine, bird sightings or dry trails. Heavy rain may cancel guided hikes and lighter rain may change the route; recheck event and closure notices. Bring water, layers and suitable shoes rather than relying on supplies in the hills. Ravenswood has no restrooms, so plan ahead. An easy meal afterward is a more flexible editorial suggestion than adding another distant long hike.
