You do not need to complete a full loop to enjoy Lake Merritt. Focus on the southern shore and its city views, then visit the Oakland Museum of California for another way to see California through art, history and natural science. Budget visitors can stay in the garden; those wanting gallery time can add a ticket.

Choose a museum day and distinguish garden from gallery access

  • Allow 3–4 hours: around 45 minutes by the lake, half an hour in the garden and another 1–2 hours for galleries if desired.
  • OMCA normally opens Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and until 9 p.m. Fridays. It closes Monday and Tuesday; check holiday exceptions.
  • The garden is free during its opening hours. All-inclusive admission is $25 for adults, $22 for ages 65+, $18 for ages 13–17 and students/educators with valid ID, and free for children 12 and under. Check current first-Sunday terms separately.

Pause: the southern shore

Follow open public paths for waterbirds and skyline views, turning back when ready. Avoid adding every attraction at the north end; activities and food have separate costs.

Finish: OMCA’s garden or galleries

Enter the garden through an open entrance and notice native plants and terraces. With a ticket, choose the gallery that interests you most. Children can look for one animal, one object and one artwork before returning to BART.

OMCA is about one block from Lake Merritt BART, making transit convenient. Drivers should use the museum’s listed garage and check its hours; the usual rate is $5 per hour. Ramps, an elevator and accessible restrooms are available, but the highest roof gardens are not reached by elevator. Ask the desk for a step-free route. Keep meals out of the galleries.
