What this guide helps you understand

Start and end at Francis Beach, taking a short out-and-back on Coastside Trail toward Venice Beach. Distinguish trail and beach rules, and leave room for ocean breezes, breaks, and the return trip.

A half-day in Half Moon Bay doesn't need to stretch from the harbor to viewpoints farther south. Choose a clear entrance as your parking or drop-off point, walk a coastal trail you can retrace, and keep lunch nearby. That makes the day easier to manage. This plan centers on Francis Beach for ocean views and walking, not swimming, chasing sunset, or covering the entire coastline.

Confirm the entrance; don't just enter “Half Moon Bay”

The state park lists Francis Beach's main entrance at 95 Kelly Avenue; the city's page also places it at the end of Kelly Avenue. Before leaving, check the state park page for construction notices, openings, and parking. Parking, camping, and daytime walks are different arrangements. A camping reservation link doesn't mean a walk requires booking a campsite.

If driving, save the entrance and return route; if carpooling, agree on one pickup and drop-off point. Without a car, check the final stretch after reaching Half Moon Bay separately: a bus into town doesn't necessarily reach the beach. This guide assumes no set drive time; reassess the route over the hills from your starting point that day.

Stay on paved paths for the main route; the beach is optional

Take the route one stop at a time

A short Francis Beach out-and-back

Start at the Francis Beach day-use entrance and follow Coastside Trail north toward Venice Beach. Choose your turnaround point based on stamina and that day's access, then return the same way to Francis Beach. Venice is only the farthest optional destination; turning back sooner still completes the outing.

Read the notice board first. Confirm your return meeting point, available restrooms, and the trail entrance.

Stop 2 of 4

A short northbound stretch of Coastside Trail

Follow the paved coastal trail, watch for bicycles and crossings, and don't shortcut through dunes.

Stop 3 of 4

Turn back toward Venice

Turn back near the Venice Beach entrance or earlier. Stop extending the route if signs indicate a closure.

Return to Francis Beach

Return to the day-use area for your packed lunch, clean up, then head home. Don't add a distant beach on impulse.

Reassess ocean conditions before stepping onto the sand

The National Weather Service warns that larger waves can suddenly reach farther up shore after a calm spell and can move driftwood. Check local surf and tide advisories before leaving, and keep watching the ocean on arrival. Leave room to retreat, stay away from driftwood near the surf, and never turn your back on the ocean. If a beach hazard advisory is in effect, stay on open shore-side trails or visit another day.

Dogs and strollers each need an extra check

Dogs are prohibited on the sand at Half Moon Bay State Beach. Leashed dogs are allowed on Coastside Trail and in designated day-use picnic areas, with a leash no longer than six feet. Other city beaches may have different managers and rules. Paved paths are easier with a stroller, but sand is a separate challenge. If you need a beach wheelchair, check lending arrangements and on-site availability with the Francis entrance station first.
