A hillside garden for slow exploration, with slopes and uneven surfaces

Plan 90 minutes to two hours at Hakone, with seasonal hours, updated resident discounts, stone steps and pond-renovation information.
At Hakone, a short walk can change the view: a bridge from the pond, trees beyond the bridge, then a roofline behind you. Put the phone away briefly and listen before photographing. This historic garden sits on a Saratoga hillside, where stone steps and gravel are part of the landscape, so choosing a suitable route matters.
Check seasonal hours and admission eligibility
- Allow 90–120 minutes and navigate to 21000 Big Basin Way. Check events first; general admission does not replace bookings for tours, classes or special events.
- Admission is $15 for ages 18–64, $12 for ages 65+, $10 for ages 5–17, and free for children 4 and under. First-Tuesday resident admission is for Saratoga residents with government photo ID showing a local address, not all Santa Clara County residents.
- March 9–October 31, 2026: weekdays 10 a.m.–5 p.m., last entry 4:30 p.m.; weekends 11 a.m.–5 p.m., last entry 4 p.m. Winter closing is earlier; check special-event changes.
Explore the garden through bridges, bamboo and a short walk
A garden visit without covering the whole hillside
Suggested stop durations are editorial estimates and exclude travel to and from the area. Adjust for closures and your group’s energy.
Orient: the entrance and path surfaces
Ask about closures and a suitable short route at the entrance. Explain wheelchair or stroller needs before reaching a staircase.
View on mapMain stop: the bridge and garden views
Use open paths to reach a pond-side or gentler viewpoint. Notice how trees, stones and buildings form a scene. Check current pond conditions and access because the garden has a renovation project.
View on mapFinish: a short bamboo view and return
Add only a short open section rather than every uphill and downhill path. Return to the entrance, use the designated picnic area for food, and leave by your planned transport.
View on mapAccessible parking and restrooms are available, but the historic terrain is not fully accessible, and the entry road has bends and slopes. Follow parking signs and contact the gift shop about specific needs. Stay on paths, avoid sitting on bridge rails or climbing rocks, and check permits for commercial or formal portrait photography. Each person can choose a favorite framed view and explain their choice afterwards.
