Decide what you need before choosing where to go. Outlets work well with a brand and size list; large malls make trying on and comparing price ranges easier; open-air centers and shopping districts combine browsing, food, and walking. Filter the directory by region and type instead of crossing the Bay just to visit every center.

Two names that are easy to mix up

San Francisco Premium Outlets is in Livermore in the East Bay, not in San Francisco. Great Mall is in Milpitas and combines indoor outlet and value retail; the word “mall” does not make it equivalent to a regular full-price shopping center.

Choose the shopping experience you want

Some destinations in older guides have changed

The former Westfield San Francisco Centre closed in 2026 and is not included as a shopping destination here; it is distinct from the Union Square neighborhood. Tanforan is in a redevelopment transition and old directories may retain closed stores. One operating store does not establish that the whole center can be visited as before; check individual official store pages.

  • Compare apparel, shoes, and bags: check the six outlet directories, then choose one convenient to your starting point. Avoid trying to cover two distant outlets in one day.
  • Try on multiple brands or shop for gifts and department-store items: compare the actual stores at Valley Fair, Stanford, Hillsdale, or Broadway Plaza rather than mall size.
  • Combine browsing with a meal or meeting friends: consider Santana Row, City Center Bishop Ranch, Bay Street, Fourth Street, or the open-air centers in Corte Madera.
  • Without a car or with limited time, choose an accessible area near your accommodation. In San Francisco, consider Union Square, Japan Center, or Stonestown; include transfers and the return journey when considering distant outlets.

Shopping mallSan Francisco

Stonestown Galleria

A southwest San Francisco mall combining everyday errands with leisure: fashion, beauty, supermarkets and varied dining, plus cinema and arcade entertainment. It works for local shopping or a visitor's indoor half-day stop.

Best for:Everyday essentials, Asian food and beauty options, and an indoor half-day visit with friends or family.

Address, transport, and shopping tips
Address / district area
3251 20th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94132
Suggested visit
Editorial suggestion: allow 2–3 hours. Browse fashion and beauty, eat, then buy groceries last. For a film or arcade visit, check showtimes and each venue's age rules.
Transport and parking
The official site states that parking is free for mall customers only. Vehicles may be towed if their occupants leave the property or park overnight. The visit page also lists parking and facilities.
Before you go
Do not use the mall as all-day parking for sightseeing elsewhere. General mall hours do not mean that supermarkets, the cinema and every shop open at the same times.

Union Square

A downtown shopping district spanning the blocks around the square, with brand boutiques, jewelry, beauty, art and dining on separate streets. Use a store list for a walking route, or combine shopping with a downtown hotel stay, theatre or sightseeing.

Transport and parking
BART identifies Powell Street station as close to Union Square. Drivers can check SFMTA's Union Square Garage at 333 Post Street; the garage page lists rates and access hours.
Before you go
Union Square is a district, not a single mall. The former Westfield San Francisco Centre on Market Street should not be treated as an operating mall here. Verify individual stores using the current directory and brand websites.

Transport and parking
The official page lists driving approaches via I-880/Great Mall Drive and I-680/Montague Expressway, and identifies BART, VTA buses and light rail as transport options. Use operators' current maps to confirm stops, connections and walking segments instead of relying on old route numbers.

Editorial suggestion: allow 1.5–3 hours. Choose target brands from the directory, then group neighboring stores on the map. Include a break in the outdoor walking route; with only a few target stores, keep it a shorter stop.
Transport and parking
The official page lists US-101 driving directions, a center map and a public-transport stop at the main entrance. Confirm current routes and the last return service with the operator; do not plan an intercity trip solely from connection instructions on the mall page.
Before you go
Prepare for outdoor conditions. Visit length should reflect your target stores rather than a store count. Recheck the directory and individual hours before traveling, and confirm final prices, membership offers and returns with each store.

How visitors, newcomers, and residents can choose

  • Visitors: verify that your target brands have stores before allocating half a day. Avoid distant shopping on your flight day where possible; consider luggage space, warranty region, and whether a return would require another visit.
  • Newcomers: separate clothing, home goods, electronics, and everyday essentials. A directory listing does not establish stock for a model or large item. Check pickup, delivery, and dimensions online before visiting.
  • Established residents: handle returns, repairs, or replenishment first, then browse new stores. Compare online prices and nearby branches before crossing the Bay; combining a meal, pickup, and a convenient trip can save more than visiting another center.

Six practical ways to spend half a day

  • South Bay shopping and dinner: complete target purchases at Valley Fair, then browse and eat at Santana Row. Check each center’s parking terms separately; do not assume one parking benefit covers both.
  • Concentrated shopping on a rainy day: choose Great Mall or a convenient primarily indoor center such as Stonestown, Hillsdale, or Stoneridge. Some stores may use outside entrances, so consult the map.
  • An easy Peninsula half-day: focus on Stanford Shopping Center, adding Town & Country Village only if you have time and energy. For a specific purchase, one may be enough.
  • Car-free shopping in San Francisco: link target stores around Union Square, or choose Japan Center for Japanese goods, books, and food. Check transit that day and allow time for food queues and the return trip.
  • An East Bay outlet trip: make San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore the main shopping stop. Avoid squeezing in San Francisco sightseeing or Napa on the same day; return when your list is complete.
  • North Bay open-air shopping: choose between The Village and Town Center Corte Madera for different browsing styles. For outlet brands, pick Petaluma, Napa, or Vacaville according to the trip you already planned.

Compare the real cost, not just the discount sign

The FTC notes that some outlet products are made specifically for outlets, with materials, details, or models that may differ from regular stores; regular stores may not accept outlet returns. Compare actual prices for the same item or specifications, and ask where and when returns are accepted.

  • Save target model numbers and brand-site prices before leaving. Inspect material, fit, construction, and warranty rather than relying only on a “Compare At” or crossed-out price.
  • Check official center and brand Offers or Deals pages. Read the current terms for fees, participating stores, and stacking before using coupons, memberships, apps, or student offers.
  • Estimate the total of the after-tax item price, parking, fuel or transit, tolls, and any extra baggage. Saving a small amount may not justify several additional hours.
  • Confirm final-sale status, refund method versus store credit, in-store returns for online orders, and warranty terms for discounted or outlet-specific items. Keep receipts and tags until you decide to keep the purchase.

Hello, I am looking for [brand / model / size]. Is it in stock at this location? Can it be held, or ordered online for pickup?
Is this item made specifically for outlets? What is today’s final after-tax price, and can offers be combined?
If it does not work out, by what date and at which store or channel can I return or exchange it? Is it final sale, and will the refund go to my original payment method?
