Mount Umunhum Cold War history: Sentinel in the Sky

Cold War history at a summit air station; 159 steps on the route

Learn about life and history at the Almaden Air Force Station. The walk is about a quarter mile but includes 159 steps, so short distance does not mean step-free access. The meeting point is already at the summit; allow separate time for the mountain drive.

Before you go

  • Follow the official directions to summit parking; stopping at Bald Mountain would leave an additional uphill hike.

  • Arrive early to sign the participation waiver, and check for cancellations or road closures.

  • Bring water, layers and good walking shoes; heavy rain may cancel, and the end time can vary.

  • This is not a dog outing. Midpen guided activities allow dogs only when expressly labeled.
