Mount Umunhum Cold War history: Sentinel in the Sky

Learn about life and history at the Almaden Air Force Station. The walk is about a quarter mile but includes 159 steps, so short distance does not mean step-free access. The meeting point is already at the summit; allow separate time for the mountain drive.

Details to plan before you go

  1. 01

Follow the official directions to summit parking; stopping at Bald Mountain would leave an additional uphill hike.

  2. 02

Arrive early to sign the participation waiver. Follow any reservation requirement added to the official page, and recheck cancellations and trail closures before leaving.

  3. 03

Bring water, layers and suitable walking shoes. Heavy rain may cancel the outing; the listed finish time is not an exact return guarantee.

  4. 04

This is not a dog outing. Midpen guided activities allow dogs only when expressly labeled.

Venue · Sierra Azul Preserve; Mount Umunhum summit parking area, in the hills near Los Gatos

For · History enthusiasts comfortable with stairs / Visitors interested in the South Bay hills
