Combine ruins, cypress groves, and a short coastal walk while distinguishing accessible paths from steep slopes and stairs, with options for fog and families.
At Lands End, the city seems to fall away: ocean appears between cypress trees, while the old bath ruins recall San Francisco’s past. A first visit need not cover the entire trail. Read the ruins from above, then follow the coast as far as feels comfortable. Even in fog, the trees, rocky shore, and waves make a rewarding half-day.
Choose your starting point and a comfortable distance
- Allow an editorial estimate of 2–3 hours for views and breaks; this is not an official walking time.
- Outdoor walking and viewing the ruins require no attraction ticket; budget separately for food, transport, and any parking costs.
- Meet at Lands End Lookout / Merrie Way. Drivers should check parking signs; transit users should confirm their arrival stop and return direction for the day.
Three short stops: ruins first, then the coast
An out-and-back route from the Lookout
Stops below are editorial suggestions. Maps locate entrances; follow on-site signs for actual access.
Stop 1 · Around Lands End Lookout
Begin around the visitor center by identifying the coastline and examining the outdoor landscape model, then visit any exhibits open that day. Use this stop for restrooms and water. Ask children to locate the baths, ocean, and trail so that the walk becomes an exploration rather than a march.

Pause on designated paths and viewpoints to compare the surviving pool walls with the waves and imagine the baths’ former scale. The main itinerary stays above the ruins. Descending is an optional steep detour; skip it in slippery conditions, strong winds, or fatigue, and avoid shortcuts along walls or exposed edges.

Return to the trailhead by Merrie Way and follow marked paths through trees and coastal views. Use the accessible overlook as an initial turnaround, pausing for the wind and distant headlands. Beyond it are stairs and uneven surfaces; extend only if everyone is comfortable, and return along the familiar route.

Plan for wind, gradients, and the return trip
For wheelchairs or strollers, prioritize the short section from Merrie Way to the accessible overlook; the entire coast is not step-free. Although paved, the bath descent is officially described as very steep and cracked. Bring a windproof layer and grippy shoes. Shorten the walk in heavy fog and keep children close. Regroup at the Lookout and check transport before darkness.
