Fisherman’s Wharf and PIER 39: sea lions, waterfront walks and optional paid stops
From lively piers to a quieter cove, with current historic-ship access information
Want some company?Start an outing with this article’s coverSea lions at PIER 39 in a 2012 reference photo. Numbers vary with the season and natural behavior; the same scene is not guaranteed on your visit.
Link PIER 39, Jefferson Street and Aquatic Park in half a day. Separate free public spaces from aquarium and cruise tickets, and account for the Hyde Street Pier rebuild.
Give Fisherman’s Wharf half a day rather than stringing together every aquarium, cruise, cable car and restaurant. Start with an editorial allowance of 2–3 hours for sea lions and the waterfront, then add one paid attraction if you wish. Allow extra time for meals and lines. PIER 39 is one part of the waterfront, and it is not Pier 33, where Alcatraz ferries depart.
See the sea lions before choosing paid activities
PIER 39 has no general admission gate. You do not need a package ticket to walk its public shopping areas or watch K-Dock sea lions from an open viewing area. These are wild animals whose numbers change with season, food and migration. Aquariums, cruises, rides, shopping and meals have separate costs. Compare individual options rather than assuming a waterfront package is required.

This editorial route follows public sidewalks west. If tired, finish around Jefferson Street rather than repeating the full walk back.

At this check, NPS states that Hyde Street Pier is closed for reconstruction and its historic ships have temporarily moved to Mare Island in Vallejo. For a ship-focused visit, check the Maritime Park’s official location and opening details separately. Do not promise an easy shipboarding stop on the San Francisco waterfront. Walking around Aquatic Park and boarding historic ships are separate activities; follow on-site closure notices.

Plan transit and belongings ahead
Without a car, check F Market & Wharves stops around The Embarcadero and Stockton. Your return stop may be on a different street or side. Drivers should budget for parking and read any discount conditions. PIER 39 offers self-service luggage lockers on Level 2 next to the California Welcome Center, with several sizes starting at $10 for all-day storage and unlimited access during that day. This paid service is separate from free public-area admission; confirm locker size, availability and current charges before use. Ordinary pets are not allowed; service animals are permitted.
