Give Alcatraz its own half-day, especially if you want to hear the full cellhouse audio tour. Allow an editorial estimate of 3–4 hours from arriving at the pier to returning to San Francisco, depending on the ticket, sailings and walking pace. Night and special tours have their own schedules. Avoid squeezing the island between a fixed lunch reservation and a flight you cannot miss.

Identify the right booking before comparing prices

NPS identifies Alcatraz City Cruises as the only authorized ferry operator permitted to dock and let visitors onto the island. Follow the booking link from the NPS fees page, then check the date, party size, ages, day or night option and change policy. A bay cruise that only circles Alcatraz is not an island ticket. Check exactly what any third-party package includes and book popular dates ahead rather than relying on walk-up availability.

Free park admission does not mean a free ferry

NPS does not charge a separate island entrance fee, but a ferry ticket is required. Standard tickets include the round-trip ferry and cellhouse audio tour; check the price for your ticket type and ages. America the Beautiful passes and national park fee-free days do not cover the ferry, so you still need to book.

This is a suggested visit sequence, not a sailing schedule. Confirm arrival requirements, return options and the last departure from your ticket and staff on the day.

Arrive as early as your ticket requires, with the confirmation and required ID. Do not queue at PIER 39.

Stop 2 of 4

Island dock and uphill route

Listen to arrival instructions before following the open route uphill. Ask about the tram if you have mobility needs.

Stop 3 of 4

Cellhouse audio tour

Ask for the Mandarin version if needed. Allow time for the stories and any other exhibitions open that day.

Stop 4 of 4

Return to the dock

Allow time to walk downhill and wait for the ferry; do not leave the cellhouse at the last moment.

Plan for hills, meals and children

The dock-to-cellhouse route is about 0.4 km with roughly 40 m of elevation gain: short does not mean easy. NPS provides the S.E.A.T tram for visitors with mobility impairments; check availability and companion arrangements in advance. Eating areas are restricted, and beyond the dock only water in non-glass bottles may be consumed. Do not snack through the cellhouse or feed birds. Plan a full meal before departure or after returning, especially with children.
