Beside San Carlos Airport, Hiller Aviation Museum makes familiar aircraft easier to understand. Build your visit around three questions: how wings carry weight, how pilots see, and why aircraft have different shapes. You need no knowledge of model names. The museum is the main destination; active airport areas are outside this route.

Plan tickets, transport and energy first

  • Cost: museum admission is required. Check whether each activity is running and costs extra; budget separately for food.
  • Duration: allow 2–3 hours inside, plus activity queues and travel from the station. There is no need to read every label.
  • Arrival: navigate to 601 Skyway Rd; the museum lists free parking. A walk remains from San Carlos Caltrain; families with small children can arrange a short ride.
  • Mobility: the museum lists wheelchair access and an elevator to the mezzanine. Ask separately about access inside individual aircraft and activities.

Stop 1 of 3

Stop 1: aircraft shapes in the main gallery

Ask which cockpits and activities are available, then compare a helicopter with a fixed-wing aircraft. Children can look for rotors, wings and landing gear before reading labels. Keep wheelchairs and strollers to one side when stopping so others can pass.

Stop 2 of 3

Stop 2: early flight and airliner exhibits

Use the guide to select early-flight and airliner displays, comparing materials, visibility and controls. Follow on-site rules for cockpit and nose-section access. Exterior views still offer useful details; skip a queue and revisit a favorite aircraft if that suits your group.

Stop 3 of 3

Stop 3: an optional activity and departure

Choose one activity according to availability and queues, checking reservations, age limits and extra fees with staff. Tired children can revisit a favorite display instead. Regroup at the entrance before leaving for food, and allow time to reach the station before your return train.

Family, rain and return-trip adjustments

Keep observation sessions short with children and let each person choose one aircraft to remember. On rainy days, focus on indoor exhibits and bring a layer for pickup. Review walking directions and road crossings before using the station route, or arrange a pickup point. Never enter runways or restricted airport areas.
