This is a selection, not a one-day itinerary. Programs span Oakley, Antioch, the Livermore area, Hayward, Martinez and Fremont. Choose one main activity and arrange travel and lunch from your own starting point.

For children, check distance as well as age

  • For ages 5+, Big Break offers a one-hour walk of about 0.5–2 miles with an adult. Coyote Hills has a one-hour parent-and-child birding program on November 14.
  • Hayward’s November 15 morning session is ages 6+, requires registration and lends binoculars; heavy rain cancels. Other sessions’ all-ages labels do not apply.
  • Monday birding in Hayward and Martinez lists 2–5-mile routes. All-ages eligibility does not guarantee suitability for a young child’s stamina.

For hill hikes, check terrain before price

On November 1, Brushy Peak is about 4.5 miles with 501–1,000 feet of climbing, ages 7+ with an adult. Black Diamond is about 5.2 miles with 1,300 feet of climbing, ages 12+. Both registration windows run October 6 at 9 am through October 28 at 4 pm. Obtain confirmation before arranging transport; bring suitable shoes, water and stamina.

November 1, 9 am–1 pm. Free program; advance registration required. Walk a roughly 4.5-mile loop north of Livermore while learning Indigenous history and ecology. Ages 7+ with adult participation; 501–1,000 feet of climbing and steep sections.

Monday shoreline birding in Martinez(opens in a new tab)

November 9, 9 am–noon. Free; no registration. Watch seasonal birds near the marina. The all-ages listing describes a 2–5-mile gravel route with 0–500 feet of elevation change; consider children’s stamina.

Birding basics for kids at Coyote Hills(opens in a new tab)

November 14, 11 am–noon. Free drop-in program; $5 standard vehicle parking. Learn about birds through games and observation. The description specifies ages 5+ with a parent participating. After the hour-long program, decide whether to explore further.

Bay Bird Mornings in Hayward: ages 6+(opens in a new tab)

November 15, 8–10 am. Free; registration required, subject to availability. Beginners are welcome and binoculars are available to borrow. Ages 6+; meet at the Grant Avenue entrance. Heavy rain cancels.

Hayward has two different meeting entrances

Use West Winton Avenue on November 2 and Grant Avenue on November 15. Navigate to the stated meeting point rather than just a park name. Big Break’s algae alerts concern water; shoreline activities do not authorize water access.
