Berkeley’s charm lies in the shift from students crossing a library lawn to plant labels on a hillside. These are not parts of one flat park: campus is easy to explore casually, while the Botanical Garden sits in Strawberry Canyon and needs a separate uphill connection. This plan pairs a university visit with a closer look at plants, with room to shorten either part.

Plan campus and garden visits separately

  • Allow 3.5–4.5 hours: about an hour outdoors on campus, two at the garden and time for the connection.
  • The public outdoor campus route has no admission fee. Garden tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for ages 65+ and non-UCB students, $8 for ages 5–17, and free for children 4 and under. Check ID requirements for discounts.
  • The garden normally opens 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m., and closes Tuesdays. Greenhouses and Redwood Grove close earlier, at 4 p.m. Advance reservations are recommended for general visitors.

Take the route one stop at a time

Two parts: unhurried campus views and one garden loop

Suggested stop durations are editorial estimates and exclude travel to and from the area. Adjust for closures and your group’s energy.

Stop 1 of 3

Start: Sather Gate to Memorial Glade

See the gate, the tower from outside and the lawns. Sit for ten minutes. Follow posted building-access rules; climbing the tower is not included in this free outdoor route.

Stop 2 of 3

Connect uphill: the garden entrance

Head to 200 Centennial Drive. On weekdays, check the H shuttle from Hearst Mining Circle. It does not run weekends; occasional overflow-parking shuttles are not campus connections.

Stop 3 of 3

Explore: main paths and open plant areas

Pick up a map and choose two or three geographic collections. Compare leaves and habitats, photographing labels before plants so you can learn more later. Return to the entrance for your planned ride downhill.

The lot across from the garden entrance is listed at $1.50 per hour, with limited spaces. Reception can be weak, so save payment and return-trip details. The campus-to-garden link is a climb: the garden recommends walking or cycling only for visitors comfortable with at least half an hour uphill. Wheelchair users and families with small-wheeled strollers should check the surface map and ask staff for a suitable short route.
