What this guide helps you understand

Three flexible choices: free nature discovery in the Presidio, waterfront science or SoMa art. Compare closures, child-ticket budgets, accessibility and hills that make a short map distance harder than it looks.

A good family outing makes breaks, bathrooms and an early finish easy. Plan one main venue, one meal and an optional walk, choosing just one route below. Favor indoor time in rain; a short outdoor stretch can work if it is foggy but dry.

Check the weekday before the map

  • Monday: Randall and the Exploratorium are normally closed; SFMOMA is usually open as an indoor alternative.
  • Wednesday: SFMOMA is closed; Field Station opens at 11 AM, and YBCA is another choice covered in the free-culture guide.
  • Sunday: Randall is closed; general Exploratorium admission starts at noon, with 10 AM–noon reserved for eligible members and donors.
  • These are regular schedules; check official notices for holidays, events and temporary closures.

Route A | Presidio: free, short and flexible indoors or out

Take the route one stop at a time

Suggested visit: 2–3 hours of discovery

Field Station is at 603 Mason Street. Individual families need no ticket or reservation; hours are Wednesday–Friday 11 AM–4 PM and weekends 10 AM–5 PM.

Stop 1 of 3

Start at Field Station

Let children choose a specimen, map or observation tool and explore one question at their own pace. The facility is wheelchair accessible, with accessible restrooms nearby.

Stop 2 of 3

Add Tunnel Tops if weather allows

Take a short walk and sit down. Head back if rain or fatigue sets in rather than treating the whole park as a required circuit.

Stop 3 of 3

Check the return shuttle before leaving

Presidio GO vehicles have accessibility features. Check eligibility for the outbound and return Downtown trips separately because some commuter trips are restricted. Allow for walking between the stop and venue.

Who this route suits

Good for families wanting a short nature experience and to spend more on meals. Field Station may be too small for a full day of large-scale exhibitions. With a stroller, check shuttle rules and park maps, accounting for uphill and downhill sections.

Route B | Embarcadero: give the Exploratorium half a day

For children who enjoy hands-on experiments, concentrate the paid budget on the Exploratorium at Pier 15. Plan 2–4 hours and finish when energy drops. Listed daytime admission is $39.95 for adults 18–64, $29.95 for ages 4–17 and free for ages 3 and under. Two ordinary adults plus one child age 4–17 total $109.85 before meals, travel and add-ons.

  • Check daytime tickets and existing discounts. Thursday After Dark is for ages 18 and older; its lower price does not make it an option with young children.
  • Tactile Dome requires a separate reservation and ticket. Skip it if darkness, crawling or confined spaces are not comfortable.
  • The approach includes outdoor waterfront stretches, so bring a windproof layer. Have lunch before or during the visit, and avoid another large museum afterward.

Route C | SoMa: elevators, stools and a shorter SFMOMA visit

For visitors who prefer looking at art and limiting outdoor walking, use SFMOMA as the main stop. Ordinary adult admission is listed at $30 and ages 18 and under are free: budget $60 for two ordinary adults with one minor, checking any exhibition surcharge. Choose two floors or exhibitions and pause after about 90 minutes.

The museum lists accessible entrances and elevators to galleries. Manual wheelchairs, canes and portable stools can be borrowed free with ID at Floor 1 Coat Check, first come, first served. If needed, check availability on arrival rather than assuming equipment will be available.

Randall is free, but a short map distance is not always an easy walk

Randall Museum normally offers free admission Tuesday–Saturday, 10 AM–5 PM, with nature and science for children. The museum warns that the short approach from Castro station via States Street is very steep. If hills are difficult, arrange suitable drop-off or choose another route.
